Author Guidelines

The Journal of Candido Tostes Dairy Institute is an open access quarterly publication of the Candido Tostes Dairy Institute (ILCT) of the Agricultural Research Company of Minas Gerais (EPAMIG). The Journal publishes scientific articles and bibliographic reviews in the area of Milk and Dairy Products that should be exclusively destined. The works must be presented in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, observing the guidelines for authors of this publication.

a) Scientific articles: from unpublished research works, supported by the scientific method. The works must present innovation or originality, which justifies their publication.

b) Review articles: those that analyze and discuss works already published on a research topic, based on bibliographic documentation. The bibliographic references must consist of at least 70% of articles from the last 10 years published in national and international journals, being these. Articles may be accepted as long as they present a scientific contribution to the presented topic.

Submitted articles must fall under at least one of the following topics:

• Animal production, zootechnics, veterinary;

• Microbiology, hygiene;

• Fermented milk beverages, milk cultures;

• Processed cheeses;

• Cheese technology;

• Physico-chemistry, dairy chemistry;

• Concentrated and dehydrated dairy products, whey;

• Sensory analysis;

• Equipment, facilities, unit operations;

• Ice cream technology;

• UHT technology;

• Butter technology;

• Development of new products;

• Legislation, labeling;

• Milk quality;

• Environmental management, waste, and effluent treatment.

 

Required Documentation

- Term of responsibility and transference of author rights should be sent attached in the field “Transference of Supplementary Documents”

- Original article without identifying the authors and their affiliations.

 

Authorship

The ILCT Journal considers as authors those who have contributed effectively, intellectually and/or scientifically, to the accomplishment of the work. There is no limit to the number of authors per article. The other collaborators of the work, such as, for example, suppliers of samples, ingredients and inputs, or sponsors, should be mentioned in the Acknowledgments section, according to the authors' interest. The corresponding author is responsible for processing the work with the Journal.

All authors must sign the Term of responsibility and transference of author rights for article submission. Any insert, deletion or change in the authors’ order must be notified to the Journal, by e-mail, in a letter signed by all authors (including the excluded author). The authors are responsible for the affirmation and concepts contained in the article. They may publish their articles in the repositories of their home institution, but the source of the original publication must be cited.

The Term of responsibility and transference of author rights must be placed in the system when submitting the article as a supplementary document or sent to the email revistadoilct@epamig.br Only scanned documents from the original signed by the authors will be accepted.

 

Conflict of interests

The authors are responsible, in  the article submission, to identify and disclose any conflict of interest of personal, political, commercial, academic, or financial that may have influenced the scientific work. Authors must declare if exist or not a potential conflict of interest concerning financial funding and participating institutions in research. Information about financial funding must be included in the acknowledgments.

The reviewer must communicate to the editors any conflict of interest that may prevent an impartial opinion on the article to be evaluated. The reviewer must return the manuscript and declare himself unqualified to review it.

 

Submission of the article

Articles must be submitted electronically (www.revistadoilct.com.br). The manuscript must be written using the program Microsoft Word for Windows in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. The article must present a maximum of 16 pages. The article must be sent together with the Term of responsibility and transference of author rights.

 

English review

Works whose writing in English is not adequate or difficult to understand will be returned by the Editor. The article will only be accepted for submission again if the authors present a certificate of the English revision by an expert in the language.

 

Article formatting

The article must have a maximum of 16 pages, including figures and tables, with continuous line numbering throughout the text. There is no limit to the number of authors per article.

Formatting: A4 paper size (21cm x 29.7cm), font: Times New Roman, size: 12, 1.5 spacing (except the title, authors, and abstracts in Portuguese and English, which are single-spaced), observing a margin of 2 .5 cm for the left side and 2.5 cm for the right side, 2.5 cm for the top and bottom margin, 1.25 cm for the header and 1.25 cm for the footer.

The bibliographic review article must contain the following sections: Title (Portuguese and English); Abstract in Portuguese; Keywords in Portuguese; Abstract; Keywords; Introduction; Literature review; Final considerations; Acknowledgment(s) (optional) and References.

The scientific article must present the following sections: Title (Portuguese and English); Abstract in Portuguese; Keywords in Portuguese; Abstract; Keywords; Introduction; Material and methods; Results and discussion; Conclusion; Acknowledgment(s) (optional) and References.

TITLE: sufficiently clear, concise, and complete, avoiding superfluous words. It is recommended to start with the term that represents the most important aspect of the work, with the other terms in descending order of importance. Centered, capital letters, bold and single-spaced. Use only official nomenclatures and established abbreviations, not using abbreviations in the title of the article.

NAME(s) OF THE AUTHOR(s): the full names must be inserted in the proper place in the submission system on the site (they must not appear in the submitted article). The website must also inform complete affiliation (Institution/Department, city, state, country), complete mailing address and e-mail addresses. Sources of research support or indication of funding related to the work to be published should be mentioned in the Acknowledgments (it will be further removed by the editor for blind review).

ABSTRACT: should not exceed 250 words. It should not have paragraphs and be centered just below the title in English, in single spacing. After the Abstract, 3 to 6 keywords must be included, which must be presented in their own language, in the singular, separated by a semicolon. Avoid using terms already used in the title. Use as keywords, preferably, terms presented in the Subject Index of the SciELO database (http://www.scielo.br) or AGROVOC: Multilingual Agricultural Thesaurus (http://www.fao.org/aims/ag_intro. html).

INTRODUCTION: concerning a scientific article, the Introduction must include the Literature Review/Theoretical Reference and objective(s) of the work; if the article is a review, the Introduction should be more streamlined and contextualize the topic addressed, pointing out its relevance to the dairy sector.

LITERATURE REVIEW: This section is for review articles only; consists of the development of the article itself. The title "Literature Review" should be the first in this section, followed by the titles referring to the subject being discussed, as the theme develops. Bibliographic references must be made up of at least 70% of articles from the last 10 years.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: this section is for scientific articles only; it should address a coordinated and concise description of how the experiment was carried out so that it is possible to reproduce it. The detailed experimental design, the number of experiment repetitions, and the techniques used must be included, which must be described, or the source must be informed.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: this section is for scientific articles only; consists of the presentation and discussion of the results, based on the available literature on the subject. It can present tables and figures.

Tables: they must be made in Word and inserted after their citation within the text itself. In this case, single spacing can be used. The tables that present statistical results with tests of comparison of means, the letters must be overwritten.

Figures: photos, images, graphs (preferably in Excel), and other structures that do not fit together as tables; should be presented in color or in black and white, clear and with contrast, inserted in the text after their citation. Photos and figures must be saved in “JPEG” with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.

Equations: must be done in a processor that can enable formatting for the Page Maker program (eg Equation), without losing their original forms.

CONCLUSION (for scientific articles) or FINAL CONSIDERATIONS (for review articles): use short sentences, based on the objective of the work. Avoid citations and discussion of results in this section.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS (optional).

REFERENCES

Citations in the text: It should be presented by the alphabetic system (author-data) according to ABNT, NBR 6023:2018. For example:

Two authors- Steel; Torrie (1960) or (STEEL; TORRIE, 1960).

Three or more authors- Valle et al. (1945) or (Valle et al. 1945).

The list of references must be cited according to NBR 6023:2018 of ABNT

All the references and their correct citation in the manuscript are of the responsibility of the author (s).

- The name of the journal must not be abbreviated. The local of the publication is not necessary to be added.

- The names of the authors of the scientific paper (source) must be presented when these are in number 3. Above this value, mention only the name of the first author followed by et al.,

- References should be ordered alphabetically.

Evaluation process

Article submitted to the Journal will be evaluated for compliance with established editorial standards. The article may be returned if it is not properly regulated. The Editorial Board will evaluate the relevance of the manuscript. The manuscript not accepted will be returned with an appropriate justification.

Then, the article accepted to proceed in the evaluation will be evaluated by two reviewers specialized in the area. The whole process of evaluation of the article is a double-blind review. In case of rejection by one reviewer and acceptance of the other reviewer, a third reviewer will be consulted. It must be a consensus of at least two reviewers about the approval or rejection of an article. In case the article needs corrections, the author will be notified. The corrected article will return to the same reviewers to verify that the suggestions were attended. The corresponding author will be notified of the approval or rejection of the article by e-mail, with a justification of the reviewers.

The publication of articles will depend on compliance with the Editorial Standards and reports of the reviewers and the Editorial Board, if necessary. All opinions are confidential and impartial.

Term of Responsibility and Transference of Author Rights 

The undersigned authors of the article entitled "INSERT TITLE" declare to have read and approved all the manuscript. The authors agree to submit it to the Journal of Candido Tostes Dairy Institute for evaluation and possible publication as true, authentic, and original results. This statement implies that the manuscript, regardless of language, was not submitted to other journals with the same purpose. The authors acknowledge that will be required to provide retractions or corrections of errors related to the article, if necessary. The authors are aware of the guidelines and editorial policy of the Journal and assign copyright to the Journal of Candido Tostes Dairy Institute with the exclusive right to print, publish and sell the product worldwide, in all languages and media. Therefore, it is forbidden to authors reproduce wholly or partially the submitted manuscript in any other part or media, print or electronic. Thus, the authors declare that accepts to transfer the rights of graphic reproduction to the Journal of Candido Tostes Dairy Institute in the case of the article with the above title (or title that later come to be adopted, to meet the suggestions of the editors and reviewers) will be published in the Journal of Candido Tostes Dairy Institute. Privacy Statement

The Journal of Candido Tostes Dairy Institute (Revista do Instituto de Laticínios Cândido Tostes) prioritizes quality and ethical commitment in publication.

1 Publication and authorship

The article must present, as its last item, the list of references consulted and cited by the authors. Responsibility for the accuracy of the references rests with the authors.

Authors should cite in the manuscript sources of research support or indication of funding related to the work to be published in the Acknowledgments item.

For the submission of the article, all authors must sign the Term of Agreement and Assignment of Graphic Reproduction Rights, to ensure that the manuscript is original and, regardless of the language, it has not been submitted to other journals or journals with the same purpose. The authors also recognize in this term that there is no fraudulent data or plagiarism.

2 Responsibilities of Authors

According to the editorial policy of ILCT Journal, all manuscripts are evaluated anonymously (double-blind) and evaluated by the peer review process, that is, by two members of the ad hoc Review Board, according to the area of activity of these professionals, who issue their opinions.

The ILCT Journal considers as authors those who have contributed effectively, intellectually and/or scientifically, to the accomplishment of the work. The Term of Agreement and Assignment of Graphic Reproduction Rights must be signed by all authors, for the submission of the article, in which they ensure that the results are true, authentic, and original. Authors acknowledge that they will be required to provide retractions or error corrections regarding the article, if necessary, and that they are responsible for plagiarism.

The authors are responsible for the spelling review of the submitted works.

3 Peer review and the responsibility of reviewers

The evaluation of the article must be objective, in which the reviewers must express their points of view supported by arguments, without unpleasant or offensive comments.

Articles must be treated as confidential documents. The entire article evaluation process takes place anonymously (blind review), that is, without authorship in the manuscript for the reviewers and the identification of the reviewers for the authors.

The reviewer must communicate to the editors any conflict of interest that may prevent an impartial opinion on the article to be evaluated. In this case, the reviewer must return the manuscript and declare himself unqualified to review it.

Although articles are submitted for plagiarism inspection by the editor of the ILCT Journal, if the reviewer is aware of any similarity between the submitted manuscript and another published article, the reviewer must notify the editor to protect the journal.

4 Editorial Responsibilities

Editors have the authority and responsibility to reject or accept an article based on arguments that will be sent to the author for knowledge. The editor may appeal to the Editorial Board to decide on the approval or rejection of an article.

The editor must preserve the identity of authors and reviewers anonymously and treat manuscripts as confidential documents.

The publication of articles by the editors must be guided by the adequacy and quality of the manuscript for the Journal, without external interference.

There should be no conflict of interest concerning rejected and accepted articles. If the editor has any conflict of interest of any nature, he must inform the editor-in-chief, who will forward it to another editor.

The article will be accepted by the editor when it is corrected. However, if errors are found in the articles after publication, the editor will publish the correction or retraction.

5 Ethical Issues

Decisions by the Editorial Board will not be influenced by commercial considerations or any source of income.

Articles submitted to the ILCT Journal are considered confidential while under review. The ILCT Journal maintains the integrity of its record.

The Journal is committed to intellectual standards and ethical principles and is willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when necessary. Concerning ethical complaints about a submitted manuscript or published article, the editor will take the necessary steps to investigate the complaint.
